Keeping School Fresh Throughout the Summer: How to Use the Resources Around You
Remembering everything learned in a year when one has two or three months where they do not have to use what they’ve learned daily can be tough. This “Brain Drain” can feel like the slipping away of everything your student has learned, and so walking into a new academic year can be daunting; seemingly having to relearn everything from the year before in a week to be able to handle the new content.
Schools know this and often offer Summer Homework or Enrichment Packets to help mitigate this brain drain. The best of intentions means working on these resources dutifully throughout the summer, keeping all the content fresh.
The reality often is that little to none of the enrichment is completed and the Summer Homework is often completed the week before school starts back up. We at Grace Place understand! Staying consistent is HARD. But there are a number of ways to use the resources provided for bith parents and students.
What Resources are Provided?
Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) provides extensive summer learning opportunities, including the Backpack League for grades 1–12, virtual Summer League, and specialized camps focusing on literacy, math, entrepreneurship, and social-emotional development, such as Camp Jump Start for preschoolers.
Private institutions like Kentucky Country Day School offer programs such as Summer Stretch, Fine Arts Academy, and Homework Clinic, blending academic support with creative and athletic activities.
Additionally, cultural organizations like the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival host Camp Shakespeare, where students engage in theater instruction and performances. These programs collectively ensure that Louisville's youth have access to an enriching and educational summer experience.s
While these school-based programs offer valuable enrichment, some students may still require more personalized support to address specific learning gaps. This is where Grace Place Learning Center plays a crucial role, providing targeted instruction tailored to each student’s unique academic needs over the summer.
